Does Gender Play a role in getting funding in Startups

Is it easier for men as opposed to women to get startup funding?

  • Yes, definitely. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying, and I’m speaking as a male. I’ve read horror stories about how some investors will try to have sex with female entrepreneurs seeking funding; rather than lunch they’ll suggest dinner to discuss the business.

    Most investors are white males and they tend to fund people like themselves, which means that women and minorities tend to not get funded as much.

  • Honestly amazed this is still a question. Startup males and females around me agree it is an issue; arguments usually center on which are better ways to address this. Does this mean you know no female founders?? Because if you ask just 3, I guarantee all 3 will have stories to tell you. Same if you ask 10, or 50.

    Furthermore, search and see stats showing how something ridiculous like less than 10% of funding goes to women, despite them starting much, much bigger proportion of companies.

  • Female entrepreneur raising capital here- it’s a minefield out here and is why I’m grateful to have a male cofounder. We learned the hard way after a former advisor escalated mentoring dinners to unsolicited advances. I have had to ask my cofounder to serve as a chaperone on phone calls and outings when someone makes me uncomfortable.

    So yes, easier to be a man in all ways.

    • Female entrepreneur raising capital also here. Being in my mid 40s and married I’m generally considered unfuckable (though not ugly enough to scare them off) so it makes me a safe investment. I don’t get hit on, but my credentials and no-bullshit answers make me more peer than supplicant. I’m childfree by choice and say so, upfront, and find it helps them know I’m going to work hard for them. (sorry moms, I agree it’s crap) I have a sneaking suspicion this is why older women are more likely entrepreneurs, it takes you 20 years to unlearn the bullshit society teaches us in the first 20.
