I work on my startup full time, I receive unemployment and rent benefit. If i get a writing commission the money i’m paid goes in to unavoidable business costs, I have debts that i ignore and unpaid bills, my justification is every month we progress.

The first part is illegal (in the US, presumably elsewhere), the second is poor judgment on your part.

But, you’re probably not alone.

Hopefully you’ll be prepared when it catches up to you.

Best of luck to you. I worked on my startup while getting unemployment too – until I could pay myself something (basically unemployment). But I didn’t get rent benefit – power too you for working out how to do that. I would have done the same thing in a heart beat.

Keep on progressing. You’ll get there. The only form of luck I believe in is winning the lottery, no other form of luck exists. I believe you can create opportunities for luck to happen, by doing EXACTLY what you are doing.

Thank you for understanding, my plan is exactly this and with the choice I’ve made I’ve become very adept at making something out of nothing, I’ve also had the great fortune of encountering people offering to help with their skills free of charge.

In the UK unemployment and rent benefit are available to the unemployed, and rent benefit is also available to the working poor.

Can I ask if you dealt with the stigma of receiving unemployment? I haven’t worked out what response I’ll give to an investor/potential co-founder if I asked.

I can’t pay my debts even if I want to (which I do). It’s a misery. Not proud of it. But choices are get a real job or push the company further.

5 months fast forward, got some angel money, paid 80% of the debts, launching the product next months.

It’s a nasty game. You do what you have to do to make it work. It does sucks sometimes. Get used to it.
