Spent the last little bit learning angular just to find out it doesn’t quite fit my needs and I still need to learn a backend like node.js to make it all fucking come together. Node already looks super hard and feels low level. I miss the days of simple php and HTML which is what Ive always been used to.

  • I love php and html (the good old days) but things are always going to evolve. I just converted our whole C++ server to node.js and it’s really really easy. If you know JS you’ll love it.

  • The problem with switching to Node.js and other newer programming languages like Ruby over php is that you’ll have a very difficult time finding programmers to hire.

PHP is the most widely used language, so it’s easy to find programmers, but plenty of companies that have their code in ruby or node.js tend to have a difficult time finding programmers since very few people are knowledgeable in those areas and hence you’ll have to pay a high price to acquire one or else train programmers in those languages.

  • Why the hell do you need to learn Node.js? Many large sites run on PHP and it scales pretty damn well. Don’t go down the rabbit hole just because some yuppies claim its the bees knees. Node.js sucks crap because it API keeps changing.

  • You’re trying to build a web application. Did you think it was going to be easy? It doesn’t matter what languages or stacks you choose. The effort, especially for beginners, is tremendous.

Javascript is a hammer looking for nails. It’s tentacles have spread far and wide. You can even code in javascript in Postgresql using plv8. You can use a hammer for a lot of things, but SHOULD you?

Angular has a steep learning curve. There’s also backbone, which has architectures built on top of it, such as Marionette, that made use of backbone more user friendly. However– Do you NEED a javascript framework in the first place? If no, save your time.

As for learning pains, I’ve yet to hear any such complaints from someone who has taken up development with Python. There’s a gazillion resources — books, videos (see: pyvideo) out there to learn it well. There’s a ton of open source apps, frameworks, etc. The community is strong– more than 3000 people attended PyCon 2014 in Montreal. The IRC channels are active.

  • Might want to check out some of the PaaS backends (Parse and Firebase come to mind), there is quite a bit you can do with angular and a simple set of web services.
