I have a competition in me. I want no other startup to succeed. I hate most VCs. There are times when I … I look at companies and see nothing worth liking. I see the worst in startups. I don’t need to look past seeing them to get all that I need.

  • A healthy level of dislike for the competition is fine if it motivates you to succeed, but be careful about letting your jealousy at others’ success hold you back from your own.

If you’re too busy reading articles about other companies and obsessing about them, then you’ll never make your own company successful. Also, sometimes you can gleam good ideas from the competition, but if you dislike everything about them, then you won’t implement those ideas.

Imagine if MySpace had copied Facebook’s ideas when Facebook was first starting out. Like Zuckerberg said, they would have crushed Facebook if they hurried to copy Facebook in the beginning, but because they chose not to, Facebook crushed them.

Same with Yahoo refusing to buy out Google; now they couldn’t afford to buy them even if they wanted to. You should have a healthy respect for your competition.

  • Many companies have nothing worth liking. There’s nothing wrong with that (and they usually don’t last long).

But don’t be a dismal person, you’ll just end up living a miserable life.

    • Yup. I’m the guy who posted the first comment btw. His hatred will just consume him and make him bitter and depressed all the time. Instead of being a hater, he should focus on his own success. If he attains it, then he’ll have some haters as well. : )

      • Agree! I spent 2 years like him and ended up completely screwed up mentally. Then, a year getting back to good. It was a wretched journey.

  • You’re jealousy will destroy your business. Try to create something unique instead of something better. Stop wasting your time. Someone out there probably thinks your buisness is no good either.
