I’ve been working on my startup for more than a year now still waiting for success, while at the same time as a software engineer I keep getting very good job offers. It’s tempting to just quit and take a well paid job.

Take a well paying job and work on your startup in your free time. It isn’t a real business unless you’re making enough money to at least sustain yourself. That’s why it’s crucial that you have a source of income while you continue to work on your startup. Getting a job doesn’t mean that you’ve given up.

I am also a techy and was working part time on my startup for 2 years while having a good paying job, then I got investment and dedicated full time on my startup and only after another year I started making enough money to make the business sustainable and pay myself.

Patience and constant working helps. Use the first revenue to hire people to help you accelerate.

Its very hard to get users/traction if you are not full time on your startup.

If you think that the offers you are getting are one off and way above what you could get, go for them and work there for a year or 2.

Alternately, if you don’t need a lot of money to survive , take 6 months out and give your startup full time attention. You will be surprised how much could be done in 6 months when you obsess over it day and night.

Also time-boxing it would help re-evalute your momentum. If things are still not going good just get a good job at that time. From what you would have learnt in 6 months I am sure you will still get good offers and all you would have lost is 6 months salary for amazing experiences. (Just to give perspective, People give up 2 year and a lot of money for an MBA!)

Don’t get stuck in local maxima. Kick yourself out of it.
