SiteGround is a popular shared hosting service that offers multiple different hosting options to users, including cloud hosting, WordPress hosting, and even dedicated servers. Research has found that, overall, SiteGround comes in close to the top of the list of all web hosting companies for uptime, speed, and customer support. All plans are complete with an SSL certificate, CDN and email accounts.

Overview and General Info:

  • Speed: 716 m/s
  • Uptime 99.99%

  • Apps: Over 500 applications supported
  • Features: Website Builder, 10GB Storage, Unmetered Bandwidth, Daily Backups, Free Email, Free CDN and SSL
  • Hosting Plans: WordPress, Shared, Reseller, Enterprise, Cloud, and Dedicated hosting plans
  • Site Transfer: Yes
  • Price: Starts from $4.99 per month, renews from $14.99 per month

SiteGround Hosting – the Pros:

SiteGround has some very attractive features to consider including above-average speeds, 99.99% uptime, and plenty of extra features that both beginners and experienced users will benefit from.

1. Great Performance – 99.99% Uptime:

Over the past year, SiteGround has had a nearly perfect uptime performance, with a 99.99% average that puts them among some of the most reliable hosts available today. Strong uptime is an important feature to look out for when choosing a website hosting provider, since it will keep your website visitors satisfied. It means that your website is guaranteed to be working at all times, ensuring that you don’t miss out when your customers want to make a purchase, explore your content or get in touch through your website.

2. Excellent Page Load Time:

When choosing a web hosting provider, the site speed is easily one of the most crucial factors to consider. Google has conducted research to show that over half of web users do not want to wait around, and if your site does not load within just three seconds, they will leave. While there are several things that you can do to speed up your website, a slow host is a problem that you can’t do much about. Even if you compress images to lighten them or load content through a CDN to make it easier on your server, it won’t make a lot of a difference to your website if you’re dealing with a slow host. The good news is that there’s not much to worry about with SiteGround, thanks to their fast load time of 716ms. While it’s not the fastest out there, it does put SiteGround in the fastest hosting options.

3. Great Customer Support

The customer support on offer is another key factor to think about when you choose a website host. Being able to access answers to your questions quickly and get touch with professional and friendly customer support agents is essential, especially if there is an issue with your website that you need to deal with quickly. SiteGround provides several different options for getting support. Their knowledge base can be easily used to find answers to frequently asked questions immediately or, if you need additional support, you can call or use the round-the-clock live chat service. Live chat is the most popular support option due to the convenience that it offers and, unlike some other hosting providers, there is no delay in the answers. The customer support agents are professional, friendly, and know what they are talking about.

4. Free WordPress Migration:

DIY migration options can be hit-and-miss. Many of them are not that great and simply end up putting more pressure on the customer. However, SiteGround may be an exception to this rule with a free plugin that you can easily use for hassle-free WordPress migrations. All you need to do is log into your SiteGround hosting account where you can generate a token, and the plugin does all the hard work for you when it comes to moving your WordPress site across to the new host. While there’s a little work involved, it’s generally easy and simple to do even for beginners. Another great thing about the plugin option is that, unlike many other hosts, it allows you to migrate as many websites as you like. But if you would rather have some professional help, you can access a free migration service on the higher-tier hosting plans. A small fee of $30 is charged for each additional site if you exceed the limit of the plan.

5. Free CDN and SSL Certificate:

An SSL certificate is crucial for any site today, with Google now actively warning users if the site that they are trying to reach does not have one. An SSL certificate helps to protect any information that is sent between the user’s device and the internet, including personal details like financial information, contact details and IP addresses. This makes it much more difficult for hackers to intercept this information compared to when a site is left unsecured. SiteGround includes a free SSL certificate with all of their plans. Another freebie that’s definitely worth getting excited about is the Content Delivery Network (CDN). A CDN works by storing large files such as videos and images on many different servers in various locations around the world. As a result, the files are stored as geographically close as possible to users, which results in them being faster to load and access. With servers spread out over three different continents, you can rely on SiteGround to keep loading times fast and keep your customers satisfied.

6. Wide Range of Features Available:

When it comes to the features that they offer, SiteGround has something for everybody. Those who are new to websites can easily install popular DIY website builders such as Weebly in just a few clicks to access a simple drag-and-drop tool for building your site without the need to code. In addition, SiteGround is also integrated with WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, allowing you to install each of these apps quickly and easily without the need for a developer.

Advanced users and developers also have a lot of useful features with Git pre-installed on the larger plans along with phpMyAdmin, SSH, WP-CLI, and SFTP. Multiple PHP versions are available along with multi-level caching. You also have access to staging environments that you can use to prepare or test a site before publishing or adding new features.

You can also use a lot of different security features for your site, with SiteGround’s proprietary tool that uses an AI-bot to try and detect and prevent new attacks before they hit. According to their data, they block around 500,000 two million brute-force hacking attempts on their servers every hour.

7. 99.99% Uptime Guarantee:

SiteGround’s reliable uptime average of 99.99% is guaranteed not to drop, since it would cost the hosting provider a lot of money. They guarantee a network uptime of 99.99% on an annual basis, meaning that if they drop below that limit, they will offer you some free hosting in compensation. Bear in mind that there are some conditions when it comes to how the uptime is calculated, including exemptions for any emergency or scheduled maintenance. In addition, SiteGround does not take any responsibility for anything that you do that directly causes downtime such as installing apps that don’t work or exceeding resources. A major external attack on the system that causes downtime may also be exempt from the guarantee.

8. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee:

All of SiteGround’s shared hosting plans offer a full 30-day money-back guarantee. Bear in mind that this refund policy does not apply to renewal customers and, like many hosts, extras like domain name fees are not usually included in the refund.

SiteGround Hosting Cons:

SiteGround offers an impressive service with a high uptime guarantee, excellent loading speeds, reliable customer support and a wide variety of apps to suit users of all levels. However, before you sign up, there are also a few drawbacks to using this hosting provider that are worth considering.

1. Higher Renewal Prices:

StartUp, which is the cheapest plan offered by SiteGround, offers a price of $6.99 per month on their website – which can seem a little too good to be true, probably because it is. Almost every web host uses this same trick when it comes to pricing, by using a low introductory rate to catch your attention only to seriously raise the price when the renewal time comes around. With SiteGround, $6.99 is raised to $14.99 per month when you renew. Their other plans increase to $24.99 and $39.99 per month, so it’s important to make sure that you’re aware of the higher renewal price before signing up. The best solution to this is to lock in for the longest possible term of 36 months when you sign up to make sure that you are getting the renewal price for as long as possible.

2. Limits on the Cheapest Plan:

At first glance, SiteGround’s prices for their cheapest plan are compatible with what’s offered by the competition. However, the features offered don’t completely line up. For example, you only get one website and just 10GB of space designed to handle around 10,000 monthly visits. Although the plan also features unmetered bandwidth, or unlimited traffic, performance will suffer if you’re getting close to the limits. While this might not be an issue for smaller sites, you can expect to face the need to upgrade if your site gets bigger.

3. No Free Domain Name:

Many web hosts throw in a number of free features to attract new customers, which often includes a low introductory price, migrations, email and more. One of the most popular options is a free domain name for the first year, which SiteGround unfortunately does not offer. If you do not have a domain name already you can purchase one through SiteGround starting at $15.99 per year for a .com name.

Pricing, Hosting Plans and More:

SiteGround has three shared hosting plans available:

Startup Plan:

  • Price: From $4.99 per month
  • Websites: One
  • Storage: 10GB
  • Email accounts: Unlimited
  • Other features: None

GrowBig Plan:

  • Websites: Unlimited
  • Storage: 20GB
  • Email accounts: Unlimited

GoGeek Plan:

  • Price: From $14.99 per month
  • Websites: Unlimited

Do We Recommend SiteGround?

Yes. We listed it in the top 3 of our Canadian and Australian review pages. SiteGround is a highly recommended web hosting provider due to the features and service that they offer, particularly when it comes to their uptime guarantee and the fact that they have consistently delivered excellent uptime over the years. In addition, they offer an above-average site speed thanks to servers that are located around the world in combination with a free CloudFlare CDN account. A free SSL certificate is offered on all plans to help keep your website secure, and the pricing is reasonable, especially if you take advantage of the longest term when signing up to get the introductory price for longer, and avoid your plan hitting the higher renewal rates for as long as possible. While domain names are not free, you can easily use your own domain purchased elsewhere with SiteGround to save money by shopping around.

To have a successful web presence, it’s necessary to launch a website. However, to do so, a domain name is needed so that people can navigate to the website using their web browser.

Domain administrators are required to keep a log of all domains registered for the top-level domain (TLDs) that they administer. As such, there is a different registrar that manages all the records for the .com domains (Verisign) versus the .biz domains (Registry Services, GoDaddy). Also, the same is true for country-specific domains and other types too.

Early on, some people took the opportunity to register single-word domains for themselves or companies. This later led to some companies pursuing claims to the right to ownership based on existing trademarks. Some have been successful, others not as much. Musicians have also seen challenges to existing registrations – British singer Sting lost an arbitration case because of the generic use of his chosen musical persona.

Along with branding, it’s also useful to have a respectable domain because it can be used to send and receive emails too. This avoids needing to use a Gmail address or similar that looks far less professional to conduct business.

So, registering a domain with a domain registration service for yourself or your business is needed to look the part. They take care of registering the domain with the respective administrator (Verisign, etc.) to ensure the registration is completed. Once done, it can be confirmed a few hours later using a WHOIS search look-up using a service that provides that.

Our Top Picks for Best Domain Registrars

When considering which is the best domain registrar and why, we examined various criteria to get a good perspective on what’s valuable and features that don’t matter as much. There are hundreds of registrars each trying to get a piece of the domain registration market, especially lucrative annual renewals, so we’ve worked hard to narrow it down to the Top 5.

While price is worth favouring, other factors also play into our decision too. Because when managing a domain or changing the setup is overly complicated, it can require more time and make the registrar less attractive. Other considerations such as registrar reputation, extra services, technical support, ease of domain name searching, and management all play a role too.

Reputation requires a special mention here. A registrar that goes out of business because of financial difficulties will present problems accessing the domain to move it to a different domain registrar. Also, reconfiguring the domain for a different web host will become problematic, as will renewing it to avoid losing it after the official expiring date.

So, sticking with major players in the domain registering market, rather than fly-by-night operators providing dirt-cheap pricing for a few months, and then seemingly disappearing is worth considering here. Especially if the domain is for a business venture – you cannot afford to take undue risks. ICANN will often be able to fix the issue, but it’s not guaranteed.

To avoid the above situation, it’s best to stick to tried and true domain registrars. That way, the potential headache is avoided.

Namecheap.com – Best Overall

Key Features

  • Clear pricing
  • Free transfers of domains
  • Integration options
  • SSL certificates available
  • Free domain privacy
  • Bulk domain search for 50 potential domain names

Pros

  • Free privacy protection on registrations
  • Affordable registration prices
  • Live chat availability

Cons

  • Not everyone loves the website design
  • Email messages hard to display on the site

Namecheap Best Domain Registrar Review

Our top pick is Namecheap.

The privacy protection with each mainstream domain purchase is a major factor for people using this registrar. They were one of the very first to do so; before it was an added cost per registration which substantially increased the cost. This saves buyers $10 or more annually per domain. It only applies to TLDs and a few other types – some domains do not allow private registrations, or they’re administered differently. However, it certainly works for .com, .org. and .net registrations at a minimum.

The Namecheap customer services and technical support team are excellent. The former is quick to refer complex cases including difficulties with domain name server (DNS) management to the technical team. The latter are excellent at solving problems where hosting isn’t resolving because the domain’s DNS records are misconfigured.

The site is also quick and easy to use. It does have an odd quirk with emails and messages accessed from the top-right corner of the dashboard. These are difficult to hover over and get the dropdown list to stay in place to click on the messages. It’s finickity and needs a tweak, but otherwise, the dashboard works flawlessly.

Premium add-ons you can likely omit are:

  • Gmail update ($5 per user)
  • Private email (First 2 months at no charge, $9.88 to $49.99 per year thereafter)
  • Shared hosting ($2.88 per month)
  • EasyWP (WordPress web hosting at $1 per month)

Cost: Domain prices move around. Currently, it’s $8.88 for a 1-year dot com registration and the standard $0.18 ICANN registration fee. Renewals cost more at $12.98 for both dotcom and .org domains. They also have “Agent 88” for extensions to alternative TLDs like .press, .io, .tech, etc.). These are $0.48 for one year but may rise later.

Domain.com – Best Affordable

Key Features

  • Private domain registrations
  • Premium domains and access to brokered options
  • Bulk domain registration
  • SSL certificates
  • Web hosting
  • eCommerce options

Pros

  • Access to a long list of ccTLD country codes outside Australia and the US
  • Many free tools to explore
  • Website builder for each domain registered

Cons

  • Pricier than many other registrars
  • Only longer-term deals command discount pricing
  • Upsells are common

Domain.com Best Domain Registrar Review

Domain.com features high on many ratings as a domain registration service because its feature set is strong, and there are hosting options including WordPress sites.

For people new to using the internet and creating a site, it can be a great one-stop-shop for a domain and hosting too. This avoids the more complicated approach of registering a domain with a registrar and setting up the DNS to host at a separate web host.

The registrar has been around for over 20 years, so there are no worries about it disappearing overnight. Registrations are handled professionally with many extras available to customers.

Search features include bulk searches, premium domain searching, and auction domains available through brokers. DNS management is possible, plus hosting with unlimited disk space and tools to help market the site too.

Cost: Dot com domains are $9.99 annually with a $12.99 charge to renew them. Privacy protection on the domain record isn’t free and costs an additional $8.99 annually per domain. This is a deal-breaker for some people who prefer to use registrars like Namecheap that do not charge for it. Some discounts and coupons are sometimes provided including bundled services and new hosting accounts at a lesser charge.

BlueHost.com – Best for WordPress

Key Features

  • Ease of use
  • Privacy features and good security
  • Email support tickets
  • Live support 24/7
  • SSL certifications available
  • Hosting plans include a free TLD domain
  • Get help through the Knowledgebase

Pros

  • One of the largest web hosts
  • Free TLD domain with a hosting account
  • Partnered with WordPress CMS
  • Decades of experience
  • Customer support via multiple channels (24/7)

Cons

  • Primarily a web host, not a domain registrar
  • Part of a larger corporation that owns scores of web hosts

BlueHost Best Domain Registrar Review

BlueHost is one of the best-known web hosts due to promotional efforts through affiliates. It isn’t well-known as a domain registrar as it’s more of a side business. The company provides a free TLD with each new hosting account, which is where it’s handy in saving money if you need both a domain and a hosting account to get a new site online.

Due to the size of the company, they’re able to offer 24/7 customer support across multiple channels including live chat, support ticketing, and the phone (they also respond on social media). For people who like to fix problems themselves, their knowledge base is extensive too.

For anyone looking for a starter site with minimal traffic, then BlueHost can provide discounted hosting in the first year and a free domain.

Cost: Purchasing a new dot com domain and without a hosting account, they charge $11.99 per year. Privacy protection isn’t free, but it’s only $0.99.

Domains.Google – Best Google Integration

Key Features

  • Affordable domains
  • Free privacy registrations
  • Custom email via Google Workspaces (formally G Suite)
  • Email forwarding options
  • Manage sub-domains
  • Optional access to website builders
  • Support via live chat, email, and phone (24/7)

Pros

  • The biggest name on the internet
  • Suspected to be better for SEO
  • Easier Integration with Google products and related services

Cons

  • Beta presently
  • Not the cheapest
  • A few of the foreign country TLDs and Agent 88 domains don’t allow for private registration too

Domains.Google Best Domain Registrar Review

A new domain registration service from Google that’s still in the beta phase.

Being with Google is either seen as a good thing or a bad thing. There are truly little shades of grey here. The perception is that a domain registered here will be good for SEO and ranking in Google. It certainly could help get new sites noticed sooner than they otherwise would, but there are zero guarantees of that.

Good access to Google products with additional support, including Google Workspaces (formally G Suite).

On the services side, while it’s not the cheapest, free privacy protection does sweeten the deal. Also, for those tired of upselling, currently, there is none here. Also, if you’re a lover of the simplistic Google interface design, then this follows that edict making it an easier domain registrar to learn how to use.

Cost: Domains begin at $12 a year and include automatic renewals. Email alerts are sent out before a domain is about to expire. This process may help to avoid losing a domain when away or forgetting to renew it. Lower rate domains for .dev are possible for developers at between $12 to $15 per year.

Register.com – Best Reliability

Key Features

  • Strong domain registration and WHOIS lookup
  • Easy domain transfers
  • Good email services
  • Website builders and eCommerce options
  • Marketing tools and social media access
  • SEO facilities

Pros

  • Filled with useful tools to make domain management easier
  • Services aren’t expensive
  • Long-standing registrar

Cons

  • Lacks a live chat feature
  • Privacy protection for WHOIS records is more
  • Customer Service not available 24/7

Register.com Best Domain Registrar Review

The company began pretty much as soon as the internet was started. Trust in the brand follows its longevity in the domain registration space. It is unlikely to disappear on you.

Domain registration and transfer are easy enough. There are plenty of extra tools available that are either free or at affordable prices to launch the first website. Privacy protection is charged on top of affordable domain registration, so the total can be more than at some competing services.

Cost: Domain registrations can be as low as $5 for 1 year. However, WHOIS privacy protection adds $11 to each domain registration annually, so the total is $16 and sometimes more for unusual TLDs or other alternatives.

The Three "Rs" of Domain Registration: What is Their Meaning?

You may come across the registry, registrant, and registrar. These are called the three Rs of domain registrations.

The registry is where top-level domains are held, and the details are stored for them. The domain extension helps to identify which registry will manage it. Verisign manages all dot com domains, for instance. Other registries are managed by different companies.

The registries are managed by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). Fees commonly apply to the former when registering or renewing a domain.

When “purchasing” a domain, the registry is essentially giving you’re the right to use that domain for the term of the registration period. The domain registrar (Namecheap, etc.) notifies the appropriate registry when a domain is registered that they will administer.

While we think of domains are something we own, exclusive rights are granted similar to a lease arrangement for the registration period. Therefore, while we never technically own it, it works as if we do.

After the domain expires and various cooling-off periods have been run through, the domain usually becomes available for repurchase. Some services exist to attempt to robotically grab choice domain names upon expiry within a nanosecond of their becoming available.

Best Tips

When registering a domain for a business, consider whether it’s worthwhile registering alternative TLDs like a .org or .net version as well. Also, think about whether plural or singular versions are worth grabbing at the same time too.

Some unpleasant people register similar or alternative versions of a name in an attempt to grab “type-in” traffic that was intended to reach your site. Common misspellings and other tactics are utilized here.

It’s more difficult than ever to register two-word or even three-word domains for human-readable words today. Most are already registered. So, it’s necessary to get creative with domain registration ideas or look for premium domains as an alternative if you have deep enough pockets.

Using a respected domain registrar also avoids issues like performing searches for available domains and seeing the registrar themselves scoop them up before you’ve registered them. Big-name registrars keep searches private and don’t pre-emptively purchase domains that their customers look to acquire.

What to Look for in a Domain Registrar

It’s a choice whether to use one domain registrar purely for domain registrations and a web hosting company for hosting your site or to use a single company for domain registration and hosting in one.

There is considerable overlap between registrars that offer hosting and visa versa. It can save money in the short term to take up deals for domains and free (or heavily discounted hosting) from a domain registrar. However, hosts like BlueHost still offer a free domain (at the time of writing) with hosting accounts if you want to go the other way.

We’d probably recommend keeping domain registration with registrars where that’s their main focus and hosting with a company that specializes in that. However, it is a personal choice, and no option is wrong. With that said, if you’ll grow into a larger site or wish to do eCommerce, then we’d suggest keeping domains and hosting separately.

Here are some other factors to ponder:

Terms and Pricing

The price might be reasonable for the first year but be different for subsequent renewals. Namecheap charges more for renewals, for instance.

It’s also sometimes possible to get discounts for multi-year registrations. A few registrars offer coupons for first-year registrations, but many do not for renewals.

Domain Transfers

Newly registered domains cannot be moved within the initial 60 days per ICAAN rules for TLD domains.

Some domain transfers are free but with other registrars, they charge what amounts to an exit fee to arrange it for you. When you have many domains to move away from, these can add up fast.

What About Expiration?

Some registrars will renew your domain automatically within 30 to 60 days of possible expiration. Others like Namecheap allow their customers to indicate the domains to automatically renew and those to not do so.

Don’t assume that domains will be automatically renewed for you. Check what the registrar does and the settings on your account after setting it up.

Additional Services and Features

Many extras are included with most registrars today either as freebies or as options for premium features.

What to Look Out For

Unclear pricing is not a good thing. Registrations should include the domain name price, the ICANN registration fee for applicable domains, and any sales tax. Nothing more than that.

With premium domains, more care is needed. They often will cost more and have extra fees that you might not expect. Auction domains cost far more and may include additional domain renewal costs and other extras.

Hidden fees aren’t normal and enforced third-party connections shouldn’t be the case either. Also, look out for any negative news relating to a registrar including customer complaints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s our list of FAQs for domain registrars and domain registrations in general:

What makes the best domain name registrar?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Clear pricing
  • Affordable cost but not necessarily the cheapest
  • Easy to manage
  • Good DNS services to make changes easily
  • An uncomplicated Dashboard
  • Good customer service support
  • Fewer upsells
  • Good long-term reputation

Is Domain registration available without purchasing hosting?

It’s preferred that you register domains with a separate service to your web hosting. That’s even truer when you will grow the site substantially or register multiple domains.

Is it Necessary to Register a Domain?

When registering a domain, it is recorded by ICANN.

Using a host that offers free or paid hosting via a sub-domain such as yoursite.ourdomain.com does not register a domain for you. These types of platforms don’t look professional and won’t have private domain email either.

Is Domain Renewal Required Each Year?

If registering an initial domain for one year, then it will need renewing annually to avoid losing it. Owners can renew a domain for multiple years in a single action or indeed, can register a new domain for multiple years at the outset.

Some registrars will hold an expired domain for 60 days or longer post-expiry or make it available for resale right away. Each registrar has its policies on domain renewal after it has expired.

Closing Thoughts

Picking out a domain registrar and registering a domain name with them isn’t as complicated as it seems. Once you’ve made your selection, then the registration process only takes a few minutes.

Also, be sure to use a quality web host to keep your website online. Together, they form the backbone of your internet presence.

If you want a reliable VPS in Australia, look for these key attributes:

  • High uptime
  • Sufficient disk space allocation
  • Effective service levels (both tech support and customer support)
  • A reasonable cost
  • Extra optional extras to customize your hosting plan

Broadly speaking, this is the lens through which we examine VPS hosting providers in 2021.

Top 6 Choices for Australian VPS hosting

Virtual private servers (VPS) are far superior to the entry-level option of using shared hosting plans. A VPS uses one server that’s turned into a series of virtualized servers. The benefit of this is that each virtual server has an independent operating system, server configuration, features, and more. This usually includes being able to restart the virtual server or make application installations without needing tech support to step in. Dedicated resources per VPS include one or more CPU core(s), accessible RAM, allocated memory for PHP processes, and more.

A VPS plan is a great solution at an affordable cost compared to renting a dedicated server to obtain a similar level of control at a far higher monthly cost. Because the hardware is managed – often in the cloud – it’s also a hands-off solution too.

Upgrading to a Cloud VPS includes almost instant deployment of ‘spun up’ new servers, quick installation of new applications such as Magento or WordPress, at a low initial cost. Typically, costs are based on technology usage and access time, so the server can scale with your needs while staying affordable. Upgrades can be added like more cores or extra RAM when required, due to the scalable cloud infrastructure.

#1 Best VPS Host – Kamatera: The Best Overall Service

For enterprise-grade technology with a cloud deployment, Kamatera is a standout. They offer cloud hosting at affordable rates with servers that start at the basics and scale up to incredibly powerful ones. They can accommodate complex setups to allow for the demands of major corporations with expansive websites receiving impressive levels of traffic. They are our #1 pick for Australian VPS hosting.

Kamatera is just one brand from this global provider of IT services that originated in 1995. They’ve now accumulated over two decades of experience operating data centers and managing servers around the globe. Their client list spans many thousands by offering cloud-based technologies all day, every day.

A VLAN interface delivers security, privacy-focused accessibility for users in the cloud over a private network. The load balancing technology along with effortless scalability maintains high performance, reliable results, and above all, speed.

There’s a useful calculator on the Kamatera site to figure out the cost for different server configurations. Select the desired operating system (Debian, Ubuntu, CloudLinux, or Windows Server are available). Also, decide how much fast SSD space is required to a maximum of 1TB. The cloud server can also be customized for public IP addresses, allocated RAM, CPU cores available, and a bandwidth allowance of up to 500GB at the top end.

Trying the service out is possible without needing to over-commit yourself. Flexibility is built into the system. Pricing is charged per minute and products are cancelable when they’re no longer required, so costs are manageable too.

The service list is extensive including managed cloud services, a migration offering, consulting for the cloud, infrastructure for SaaS clients and mobile apps, and many eCommerce options too. There’s a 99.95% uptime guarantee and at least some plans come with a free traffic allowance too.

Pricing: 30-day free trial that begins at $4.00/month.

Pros

  • Scalable flexibility with the ability to try new products or services for a limited time
  • Round-the-clock technical support
  • 30-day free trial period
  • Suitable for websites, SaaS, and mobile apps

Cons

  • Cloud scales with the need, but so inevitably so do the costs
  • Backups are not included
  • A domain isn’t included
#2 Best VPS Host for Australians– InMotion Hosting

InMotion has VPS hosting as their priority, but they’re not restricted to a limited set of options nor are their customers. In addition to virtual private servers, they also offer both dedicated and shared server options. Furthermore, they also support customers with web design services should that be required. For people who want everything under one roof, and the ability to grow with the company, it’s hard to argue with their offering here.

Their associates receive over 160 hours of training before being front-facing, so the customer service and support staff know their stuff. Each associate also has a minimum of four years in this environment to learn their trade before coming on-board too.

The VPS hosting from InMotion includes managed services with a management plan and security updates. This allows you to focus on your core business and not worry about the servers running behind it. For self-hosting, they provide peace of mind.

Pros

  • You can choose how many cores, domains, and emails to add to the account
  • Support staff are second to none
  • 6–36-month hosting plans include a free domain

Cons

  • Costlier than some other VPS hosting
  • Only Linux; No Windows servers available
  • The uptime of 99.97% is lower than some competitors

#3 Best Australian VPS Host – Bluehost

While Bluehost is renowned for their shared hosting – their marketing has made them the first stop for many hosting customers – they also offer other hosting packages. These include cloud-based ones, VPS, and dedicated servers. And domain names if required.

They’ve been out in Utah for the last 15 years and now manage over two million sites. They employ over 700 members of staff who oversee their technology and the support needs of their customers.

Managing multiple servers is possible with their flexible VPS setup. Scaling up the disk space as needed avoids storage issues on the account, plus adding a range of VPS servers to meet different requirements is doable too. Also dedicated hosting and/or shared plans are also in their list of available services. One standout feature with Bluehost is that they only use solid-state drives to speed up disk access for better speed and reliability.

Once your account is set up, creating a VPS is almost instantaneous. They use KM Hypervisor to provide easy access for every VPS customer. Access to cPanel is unusual and useful. It also permits customers to increase their storage level on-the-fly. Increasing the RAM or CPU for a VPS plan isn’t directly possible right now but may be in the future.

Pros

  • Free domain name
  • A 99.98% uptime record
  • WordPress installs at a click of a button

Cons

  • VPS hosting plans are pricey at the higher levels
  • Single IP address allocation
  • Limited storage provided on plans

#4 Best VPS Host in Australia– HostGator

HostGator originated in Florida – the land of the Gators – hence the name. Despite being bought out, the name and approach haven’t changed much since 2002. They now are responsible for hosting an incredible number of websites compared to smaller hosts. Their services include dedicated servers, VPS hosting, and shared hosting. Additionally, they’re capable of providing search engine optimization, managing PPC advertising campaigns, and producing website designs for clients too.

There is a live chat option, and 24/7 customer service is provided. But it’s seldom needed because customers have full control over their VPS. They’re also able to customize and change the configuration to meet their personal needs.

It’s possible to scale with HostGator because they have a broad range of hosting options and added services. Whilst their VPS hosting is lesser-known, they are still one of the top ones.

Pros

  • Generous storage of 120GB
  • Impressive 99.99% uptime
  • Strong tech support and customer support

Cons

  • Hosting plans can get expensive
  • Domains aren’t free
  • The dashboard now looks a little dated

#5 Best VPS Host – iPage

iPage is a long-standing web host that’s been around since the late 90s. They offer various types of hosting plans, email servers, website design, and more.

Their focus is on providing low-cost hosting options coupled with dependability. Their systems are easier to use than most, so they have a following with busy SMEs who require services without the fuss. iPage provides VPS hosting, plus dedicated servers, WordPress hosting, and shared hosting. All services include their customer support around the clock.

Root access for their VPS isn’t automatic but can be requested. There are also other customization options too. The VPS hosting includes proprietary software or apps from the client. Get in touch with them to discuss that. Their VPS is cloud-based and one of the more flexible ones.

Also, migration isn’t difficult because the VPS is set up almost immediately. The ability to scale up as a website becomes busier and to scale down later is also possible if you anticipate having peak seasons.

#6 Best VPS Host – Liquid Web

Liquid Web has been offering hosting services for two decades. They’re pricier than many of their competitors but aim to offer more to back that up.

Besides VPS servers, they have dedicated hosting plans, and support WooCommerce and WordPress hosting too. As fully managed servers, it’s hands-off for their customers. They handle server issues, general admin, hardware upgrades, and network management include installing software patches and updates to keep safe.

The VPS plans include ones with a different allocation of RAM and SSD storage. The management level possible depends on the plan and the location of the data center. While the VPS won’t support a custom operating system, they do provide a choice of five popular ones.

Upgrades are a button click away. Their customer support is excellent and has a strong reputation that you get what you pay for.

For anyone on shared hosting, they will get a surprise when moving up to virtual private servers. The speed that page’s load is significantly faster than they’re used to. VPS plans also typically have far greater customization potential to scale up and down as needed. They can be modified in other ways too. Also, VPS hosting can support different requirements including some fairly complicated ones.

Virtual Private Server hosts are a step-up from shared hosts for many site owners who want to take their hosting more seriously. They offer increased flexibility, without endless maintenance problems, and there are plenty of quality options to choose from.

Furthermore, there are other hosting plans if you feel that VPS hosting is not for you.

FAQs for the Best VPS hosting providers

FAQs for the Best VPS hosting providers

For complete beginners with their first site, then VPS hosting is overkill. However, for established sites and customers who want greater control over their hosting, then they’re the next step beyond shared hosting plans. While they’re a little more expensive than shared hosting, they offer far more in speed, resources, and support.

Is VPS superior to shared hosting?

A VPS has a greater allocation of processor cores and RAM. It’s also not weighed down as much by other sites being hosted on a crowded server. Due to the virtualized nature of the hosting, it is somewhat isolated and performs reasonably independently for speed and reliability purposes. When you've outgrown the often-sluggish performance of shared hosting, then a VPS is the answer to your hosting problems.

Who is the best VPS hosting provider

The best VPS provider changes over time. Currently, we feel that Kamatera is the best overall. InMotion Hosting is also a strong contender too. It depends on where your priorities lie as to which VPS host will be the best for you. They each offer pros and cons, less or more customization, and come in at different price points. It’s best to consider your options carefully before deciding.

When writing web hosting reviews for Australian host options, we take a lot of factors into consideration including ease of use, security, key features, speed, support and more. Speed and support are two of the most important factors that we will consider when reviewing a host.

For example, did you know that a one-second delay in page loading speed could decrease page views by 11%? That means that over one in ten potential customers who land on your site will turn away for every second that they are waiting for your site to load. That’s just one of the reasons why choosing a top-quality web host is so important.

1. Best Web hosting service in Oz - HostPapa:

Price: $2.99

Storage: 100GB

Support: Tickets, Live Chat, Phone Helpline

HostPapa is definitely great in terms of cost to value ratio. For just under three dollars per month, you will get a massive 100GB of SSD disk space, a free domain name, unlimited bandwidth, and access to excellent round the clock support.

HostPapa is fairly experienced with server resource management, so you can be sure that all accounts will have enough power to ensure that the sites continue to run at maximum performance levels. When it comes to speed, they offer decent data centres, although the one drawback is that there are none located in or nearby to Australia. However, they do promise and deliver on 99.9% uptime.

This hosting provider also has a lot of freebies to offer, including a free migration for your site from your old host if required, and a thirty-day money-back guarantee. If you’re looking for high-quality hosting that is also affordable, HostPapa could be the best option for you. They support all popular CMSs including Joomla WordPress and over four hundred apps that can be installed easily with one click.

Services on Offer:

HostPapa offers a wide range of hosting services to suit everybody including shared hosting, VPS hosting, reseller hosting, WordPress hosting, and custom web design services. They also offer integration support for Office 365 and G Suite and can take care of all domain name registrations on your behalf.

Control Panel:

HostPapa uses the industry-standard cPanel for their control panel which offers all the functionalities that you will need including email creation, file manager, add-on domains, script installers, security features and more.

Great Support:

Unlike many other budget hosts that are lacking when it comes to customer support, HostPapa provides round the clock customer service with various ways to get in touch including phone, live chat, and support tickets. They are surprisingly responsive for a cheap host and very helpful if there is an issue that you need resolving. You can also book virtual training sessions that are free for the first thirty minutes or join weekly webinars if you want to learn more about using the hosting service.

What We Think:

HostPapa, in our opinion, offer expert services at an affordable rate. For the price, you really can’t go wrong with excellent quality hosting options available and plenty of features.

Pros

  • Lots of SSD storage on offer
  • Charges in AUD
  • Thirty-day money-back guarantee
  • Excellent round the clock support

Cons

  • No servers in or near Australia

And, they provide their own in-house caching system, known as SuperCacher, which serves your sites as quickly as possible.

Since security is an absolute essential when it comes to choosing a web host, we think that SiteGround is the best choice due to their in-house security software setup that is constantly crawling all the hosting sites, keeping an eye out for any possible security issues or breaches. They also have a dedicated security team who work hard on a daily basis to track new vulnerabilities and patch any issues immediately to make sure that everything continues to run smoothly. Factors dependant on the hosting provider:

  • CPU and server hardware
  • SSD disk storage
  • Network speed

Factors dependant on you or your web developer:

  • Number of images uploaded to web pages
  • CSS and JS compression
  • Site coding and configuration

Why is the Location of the Datacentre Important?

It is important to choose a datacentre that is located close to the location of your website visitors. The closer the datacentre to the visitor, the faster the ping times are, which leads to quicker website loading times and helps avoid unnecessary downtime.

What to Check Before Choosing a Web Host:

Before selecting your Canadian web hosting provider, consider the following five factors:

  • Pricing: Ensure that the price is within your company’s budget. Bear in mind that renewal prices are often much higher than the introductory price.
  • Custom Support: Pre- and post-sales support is essential for building your desired website.
  • Reviews: Research the hosting provider to check what previous and current clients have to say.
  • Speed: Speed is important as page load time has a crucial effect on the reputation and performance of your website.
  • Datacentre location: If you want to buy web hosting in Canada, you should choose a hosting provider with datacentres in Canada or nearby.

What Are the Different Web Hosting Types?

  • Shared: A shared hosting plan means that you share the physical server and some software applications with other website owners.
  • Dedicated: This is a private hosting plan where you use the entire web server and do not share server space or resources.
  • Collocated: This type of hosting is when you purchase your own server, but locate it on the hosting provider’s premises. You are fully responsible for the server and get full control and access rights.
  • Cloud: This type of hosting allows you to decrease or increase the server resources as an automatic response to traffic. It is billed on a per-hour basis depending on your traffic, and is the most in-demand hosting type for web apps since developers do not need to worry about hosting infrastructure.

Can You Code Your Website for Free?

If you know a programming language such as HTMP, CSS or PHP, you can code your website free of charge. Otherwise, you can use popular CMS options like WordPress, Magento and Joomla to create a blog, website, or eCommerce website.

Where is the Best Server Location for Canada?

It’s possible to host your website on your PC; however, it’s important to note the following:

How Can I Contact an International Support Team?

Depending on the type of query raised and the complexity of the issue, customer support calls can last a long time, which can be costly if the number is international. While you can use live chat and email support tickets for free, in the event of a call being required you can use a service like Skype to make calls to customer support numbers in the USA and other countries.

Can You Have a Website Without Hosting?

You can easily build a website without hosting it; however, nobody else except for you and anybody who has access to your PC will be able to see it. Your website requires hosting for it to be accessible online.

Is a Dedicated IP Necessary?

When you are just beginning operations, a dedicated IP is not usually needed. You can ask to switch to dedicated IP as your business grows.
