Percentage of Equity for Mobile App Development

So I’m a developer and my friend came up with an idea that could be a great mobile app. After lots of dicussion, we decided to go for it, but the problem is the percentage of the revenue if we get money from it. We are still beginners and don’t know how we could split that, that’s why I want some help to figure this out.

So my role will be taking this idea, process it to a workflow in an app, designing and developing the app, the database, deployment and any future updates.

My friend’s role (who came up with the idea) would be the management of the parties that would be involved in the application.

Some tasks somehow would be shared like marketing the app.

The complexity of the application is not that hard I believe, so just to take advantage or to be taken advantage of this situation. What is the fair percentage that each of us has to cover from the revenue of the application, and will it be the same for the cost needed in order to publish the app (like servers, APIs, services, etc)?

I hope for an answer that helps to figure this out.

  • Keep in mind that an idea is nothing without executing. Also the scarce commodity is the developer not the project manager.

If you really want it to be fair and that the split is based on the effort each of you puts into the project, I highly recommend you to read the book slicing pie. It’s a methodology for sharing equity (dynamic equity) which is based on the amount of work and money each of you puts in the system.
