Is hiring remote interns a good idea?

What about security around access to the company site, work given, etc. Although it seems the same issues prevail even with interns in your office, especially if they use their own laptops anyway. Is it a good idea? If it is, how should one approach it?

  • Depending on the age and skill levels of the interns, I don’t think this is a good idea. When I was an intern at a startup, the greatest lessons came from being in the same office as everyone else, being held to the same standards, and really being a part of the team.

  • I agree with the previous response. Interns are by definition semi-skilled. It is hard to get quality production from them except for menial tasks better suited to odesk. And the training value of an internship is much lessened by distance.
