How do I hire a digital marketing/social media specialist?

We’re a very young startup and we’re looking to grow our user base through social media engagement. We’ve tried to tackle Twitter on our own, and we’ve had some success with it, but it’s just too much to keep track of for us while we’re building our product, so we’d be interested in hiring someone to run it for us. I’ve never hired for a position like this before and have no idea where to start, how to advertise, what skills to look for. I don’t want to farm this out to an intern (although maybe that’s the best way to go here? I don’t know). Any advice?

  • There are plenty of companies offering digital marketing for products/services. Choose any by checking their review. If you are looking for some recommendations then I have worked with Brand Recourse earlier and they are surely good I would say.

  • Effective social media engagement is very time consuming and there is certainly an art to it. I’m the founder of a PR consultancy which offers social media support to clients. I’d be happy to provide some advice if that’s helpful? I’m not sure where you are based – we are in Australia, NZ and the UK. If you are US-based, we have strong affiliate relationships there and and can point you in the direction of talented folk who can help. You can reach me on: chm@manacommunications.com.

  • Twitter is only one part of the equation, Facebook ads can fuel a ton of traffic. Depending on your product a Snapchat presence may be valuable as well. Building something great is amazing, as long as there are people that know about it. Press is also great to get the word out. We can help with consulting in this regard please shoot an email at feedback (@) rendezwho.com

  • A digital marketer and a social media person are often quite different people – roles, experience, expectations. That’s your first issue.

  • I can add you to a FB group with a bunch of Social Media people and you can post a listing there. I’m on linkedin here: linkedin.com/in/domanus – mention SA when you reach out b/c I get so much spam.

I also agree with the above that they’re a little different.
