How do you go from being a failed startup founder to working in venture capital?

It seems a lot of venture capitalists are failed startup founders. Any suggestions/tips/advice on how you go from being a failed startup founder to getting into/becoming a venture capitalist? If you have successfully done this I would really like to know how you did so.

  • I have friends that were founders that have gone on to become an EIR (Entrepreneur in Residence) at funds. Not all of them offer this, but I bet you could find an opportunity if you looked for it.

  • Mostly it depends on whether you can raise a small fund by yourself. If you can then you can become a vc!

Raising a fund is very hard though but some founders do get pretty good at raising money and not so good at building a product/business in which case they can transition to being a vc.
