I’m not as hardworking as I should be. I am working on multiple things at the same time and not giving my 100% to any of them. I’m fucking lazy and I hate myself for that! How do I motivate myself? ;(

    • OP: That didn’t help :/ I hope you meant to help, though.

I’ve been very hardworking at times – especially at my jobs. But when I’m working on my own projects, I feel lost cos there’s no direction and I feel scared of confrontation with my problems. I know there is merit in my ideas and I do work for them, I just wish I was crazy mindf*ck hardworking and that I went mad about my passion.

  • I struggle with that, too. That’s my take on it:

There are times where you get stuff done and times where you don’t. Just accept it and go with it.

I personally love to listen to podcasts with inspiring people. One one side I see what they accieved and it gives me more willpower to work harder and pursue my dreams to become one day like them.

On the other hand many people also say that they are, in fact, not perfect and don’t do everything right all of the time.

Especially Tim Ferriss’ Podcast is really good regarding this because he is really open and admits often that he doesn’t follow through a lot of the time.

But he also keeps going and so should you.

  • The key reason why you are not getting things done is because you are handling too many things. Prioritize and take just ONE out of the many things.

Defer, cancel, delegate the rest and just focus on ONE thing at a time. You’ll see the difference.

Just remember – prioritizing will be tough. Use the lifeboat strategy. Which one of those will you keep in your lifeboat if you HAD to throw the rest away.

    Best.

    • +1.

The number one thing you’re lacking is focus. That doesnt mean you should go pop adderall pills. It means theres too many things distracting you. You’re getting depressed because you dont feel like you’re accomplishing anything and overwhelmed.

If I pulled a gun to your head and said sacrifice 50% of the BS that’s wasting your time, can you do it?

If you must do all of this (I get myself in this rut too), heres my tip:

Prioritize on making 3 wins a day.

These must be tasks that can be completed within a reasonable time– 1 hr tops. Not high level tasks like build my company website. Break it down defined tasks.

Plan your 3 wins the night before and add them on your todo list (I use Trello). Jot down all your other tasks into a separate list and reprioritized at the end of each day. Then every morning, look at your to do list and focus on the three, one by one. Stop wasting your time on Facebook, Twitter, Hackernews, and everything else thats wasting your brain cycles. Do your three for the day, then go do the other stuff.

      Hope that helps.

  • If you spend more time thinking about why you want to work on this startup and what makes you right for the job, you’ll be more motivated than ever

  • you need to put more skin in the game. if the startup is the one paying your rent, salary and you have 10 employees relying on you to bring in sales and investment, you’ll be very motivated.

  • Get drunk
    Get sober
    Get to work

You can use tools to manage yourself – todo lists, reminders, email follow up notifications, setting yourself milestones etc.

  • Don’t listen to the people telling you to only choose one thing… Life is never about one thing… Entrepreneurs get bored with one thing…

However, when doing a task, focus on one thing.

I have a lot of issues with being productive when having lots of projects, however it can be solved. Schedule ahead of time when you’re going to work on which project. M-F 9-5 my job. Mon, Wed, Fri 8-10 Project 1. Tuesday 8-10, Sat 9-5 Project 2. Etc. It will help with the single task focus.

Also, it’s been proven REPEATEDLY in many studies that people are MUCH more effective when working on a time line. “Ok, it’s Monday at 8pm I have 2 hours to make this UI element/ Write a document/ Etc”

Begin everyday with your cereal and a piece of paper. Schedule out your goals. When working at work, FORGET ABOUT project 1 and 2. When working on project 1 FORGET ABOUT work and project 2.

  • I feel the same way. I’ve come to find that side business are not working out. I need to focus on one thing- either a career or business. It’s hard to be decisive when everything sounds interesting and everything sounds hard. So you end up doing a bunch of research and not doing anything. Than you feel lazy. There will always be a better idea. At some point you have to get over analysis paralysis and stick with something. Give yourself a deadline to choose.

  • Just work smarter not harder 🙂 Find a smart way to get whatever done done without the hard work if possible. Working hard is annoying and I don’t understand why its needed in life. Your not lazy, just not focused on something that actually interests you.
