I am so depressed I can't get out of bed. My startup is out of money and I can't keep hustling. I'm afraid I won't be able to pay rent, but I am so depressed that it is hard to get a job. Antidepressants don't help.

  • I feel your pain.

Now, go get out of bed and get a job! You will feel better almost immediately.

Think if it like getting a cavity filled. It’s going to be painful but the alternative is worse.

  • Hang in there buddy!

    Regarding your antidepressant medication:

    – What do you know about your antidepressant?

Does it work on just serotonin or on both serotonin and norepinephrine?

Do you know how long it will take for it to work?

    What are the side effects?

    Give your medication time work

It can take several weeks before you can feel its effects
Recognize when your treatment isn’t working

After giving it time to work, you should be able to feel and function at the level you were at before depression started

Personally, I believe that depression should be treated with medication and therapy, not just medication…If in-person therapy isn’t something you feel comfortable doing or is too difficult for you to do at this point, you may want to check out this app/website: https://www.7cups.com

  • The titration period of trying other antidepressants is hard. I’ve lived through what you do, and it’s hard.

But I can tell you that IT WILL GET BETTER. I know it doesn’t seem that way now, but reach out to friends and family and just be around them. You don’t have to tell them your issues if you’re not comfortable, but going out to be around your loved ones will help.

  • OP here. I can’t get out of bed. I don’t want to see people. I’ve tried a bunch of antidepressants and given them time but they literally don’t work.

Mostly this is situational- failing startup, custody battle, far from family.

I know this will pass and I just have to hang in until it does. Thanks for being here

    • Have been where you are. Hang in there op. Take some time out, you need it. Do some things for yourself. Seriously. Whatever you really want to do that you enjoy. Talk to your best friend or whoever you feel you connect with. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Whatever happens, be your best friend first and always think good about yourself.

  • Been there. It DOES get better.

    Hang in there.

Seek regular medical treatment and therapy.

Commit to small goals and celebrate.

For today, just try to get out of bed for example.

    Tomorrow, out of the room.

Next day, walk 2 mn in the street.

You’ll come out of this stronger.

    Take care of yourself !

  • Thank you all for sharing. You are definitely NOT alone. There are professionals I can recommend (not medication alone) as well as some great programs specifically for executives in the Bay Area that work with depression and addiction issues as well.

Please reach out to me directly if you would like any referrals. I work with professionals and help them get linked to resources as part of my role with my company. http://www.constellationbh.com sklindt@constellationbh.com (real email)

  • Antidepressants won’t do it alone.

I don’t know how you do it in US, but in Germany your doc is going to say thats drugs alone won’t work. You have to change your life and keep an eye on your mental condition.

Being depressive is not a once-in-a-lifetime situation. If you have a predisposition for depressions, you’ll have to handle it for the rest of your life.

I’ve been depressive too and took antidepressants for years without any effect.

In the end I decided to go to a specialized hospital after my whole life broke down. The people there where a much bigger help to mee than any of the drugs I’ve taken before.

Staying in those hospitals for 2 months is very different to just visiting an psychatrist once or twice a week because 1. you have time to relax and get distance to your problems and 2. you need time to learn how to live a life with a depression, even if you’re feeling better again.

It’s hard to do that step, I know… But as I said before, drugs alone won’t do.
