I can’t stand interviewing at startups. Most startups are self-obsessed and oblivious to the real world. They want to sell me, and waste my time, instead of telling me why they want me. Most aren’t even serious about hiring anyone.

Try at IBM or Accenture, they may have a culture and track record more up to your expectations.

When you work in a startup, you must really believe what you are doing is meaningful, otherwise how are you supposed to put your future at risk and work hard on a project that’s yet nothing?

If you are a developer, they might want you to work as a developer. If you are in marketing, they may want you to help them build a marketing strategy and implement it. It’s quite easy really. But it seems to me like you may not enjoy the startup life if you can’t deal with inflated dreams, self-obsession and a healthy dose of BS.

My approach is pretty simple. Ask them what their revenues (or at the least current funding and planned expenditures) look like, and what the most embarrassing aspect of their infrastructure (if you’re in tech) is. If they can handle the question, then you know. If you can’t get a straight answer, you don’t want to work there. Nothing is more depressing than to work for a “dream” whose purveyors think had died.

Try out working in startups like Affirm. They have a high hiring bar.
